De Krans Wines has reaffirmed its position as one of SA’s leading port producers, adding the title of 2021 SA Champion Port to its long list of prestigious accolades. This award was bestowed to the producer at the recent 2021 SA Young Wine Show, and this is the third time in four years that De Krans has been given the trophy. The SA Young Wine Show dates back to 1833, when it was held for the first time by the Cape of Good Hope Agricultural Association (now Agri-Expo) in Rondebosch. An annual awards event, the competition gives winemakers the opportunity to showcase the best wines of the current vintage.  In

De Krans Wines in Calitzdorp is without a doubt one of SA’s leading port producers. While De Krans Wines is widely known for producing award-winning, quality port-style wines, there is a lesser-known, albeit equally enchanting side to these Portuguese grape varieties that have found their way to Calitzdorp in the 1970’s. Since producing the first Touriga Nacional single variety in South Africa in 2000, De Krans Wines has paved the way in embracing these special Portuguese grape varieties that flourishes in the Klein Karoo area, due to its similarities to the Douro Valley in Portugal.  They have managed to continuously innovate and present these varieties to the consumer in a unique and authentic way. It has been than 48 years since the first Portuguese grape variety was planted at De Krans by the Nel family. Since then, because of the the similarities in terroir between the Klein Karoo and the Douro Valley in Portugal, these vineyards have flourished. As a result, De Krans automatically gravitated towards producing exceptional quality port-style wines, winning multiple top accolades and managed to carve a name for itself through the years as being one of the leading port-style wine producers in the country. For many wine drinkers the idea of a port-style wine is quite daunting – there are the different styles and the different names, the

World Moscato day will be celebrated on Sunday, 9th May this year, coinciding with Mother’s Day in South Africa. Moscato, as it is now known, has its roots in the province of Asti in Northwest Italy, where it was already cultivated and made since the 1870’s. Made in a frizzante style, Moscato d'Asti was the wine that winemakers made for themselves. This low-alcohol wine could be enjoyed at midday meals and would not slow down the winemaker or his workers. After the work day was done, the Piedmontese tradition of long, multicourse evening meals gave Moscato d'Asti the purpose of a  digestive, that cleansed and stimulated the palate

The De Krans Basket Press Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 really is the best of both worlds in that it is a full-bodied wine when it comes to flavour profile, yet soft and elegant on the taste, with an integrated tannin structure. The wine pairs perfectly with that impromptu pizza, a variety of pasta dishes, or a good old braai. Not only an all-rounder when it comes to the drinking occasion, but it is also competitively priced, making it a fitting red wine to enjoy regularly. This wine has a typical character of cassis, ripe berries with fresh prunes and cedar spice on the nose. What makes this Cabernet Sauvignon

With a Christmas like no other, many were left celebrating without most of their loved ones. It seems like we have a lot of catching up to do in terms of making the special times count. With Easter around the corner, and the lovely balmy days of late summer, the De Krans Pinotage Rosé is the perfect wine to celebrate with in style. The De Krans Pinotage Rosé 2020 has a delicate, light pink colour with a refreshing, crisp acidity and fruit character of red fruit flavours like strawberries and candyfloss on the palate. This Rosé pairs well with summer salads and seafood dishes, like cob, seafood paella,

De Krans recently released their 2020 Free Run Chenin Blanc, a delicious unwooded wine perfect for all Chenin lovers. The unique, boutique style De Krans Free Run Chenin Blanc is packed with fresh ripe tropical fruit, banana, guava and passion fruit flavours, with hints of lime. Aptly known as the Free Run Chenin Blanc, because only the free run part of the juice is used, resulting in more intense fruit flavours, complexity and longevity. In comparison with the 2019 vintage, the 2020 vintage is slightly more complex with an integrated and fresh acidity, resulting in a well-rounded wine with a lingering aftertaste. This wine is light enough to drink
