Already a force to be reckoned with in the port industry and gaining ground for its whole range of wines, De Krans Wine Cellar in Calitzdorp was awarded the IQ Business Most Innovative Trophy for its maiden vintage Méthode Cap Classique. The results were announced at an awards function held in Somerset West on Friday, 18 September.
Not stopping there the estate was also awarded Double Gold for its De Krans Cape Vintage Reserve 2012, as well as Gold for the De Krans 2014 Touriga Nacional and 2013 Tinta Roriz respectively.
Now in its 19th year, the Michelangelo Wine Awards is the only wine competition in South Africa with an exclusive international panel of accredited wine judges, wine makers, wine masters, journalists and sommeliers. A total of 1665 entries from 364 producers were entered in a total of 48 classes, including liqueurs, brandy and grappa.
Although made in the traditional bottle-fermented style, what makes this 2013 MCC stand out from the rest is that it is made from a blend of Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc and TintaBarocca! A first for South Africa when making MCC, yet still staying true to the roots of the Portuguese varietals for which De Krans has become famous for throughout the years.
A zero dosage MCC made in limited quantities winemaker Louis van der Riet describes the wine as being a crisp translucent colour with a slight golden hue. Energetic yet elegant bubbles create a crown of fresh delights. Sizzling notes of soft pear contrast with light candy floss and baked biscuits. The palate is sculptured into an orchard of peach, lime and green apples with secondary yeast flavours, resulting in a perfect balance between fruit and acidity. Perfect on its own, served as a welcome drink or with soft cheeses and pâtés.
The De Krans Cape Vintage Reserve Port 2012 has a vibrant deep red colourand displays intense aromas of prunes, spices and tobacco. The palate is juicy with concentrated fruit and an excellent tannin balance. This port was also awarded a 5-star rating in the authoritative and internationally recognized Platter’s by Diners Club South African Wine Guide 2015 (the 10th consecutive 5-star rating for De Krans), named as one of the Top 100 Wines in South Africa, as well as winning the Tony Mossop Trophy for the Best Port In South Africa at the 2015 Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show. Not stopping there with its list of accolades the 2012 vintage was also named SA Champion Port at the SA Young Wine Young in 2012.
The De Krans 2014 Touriga Nacional and 2013 TintaRorizboth also won CAPPA Top 10 awards earlier this year, proof that these unique Portuguese varieties do exceptionally well in Calitzdorp.
