De Krans Wine Cellar in Calitzdorp has once again showed why its ports are so highly regarded. The 2011 Cape Vintage Reserve Port was awarded the Tony Mossop Trophy for the Best Port in South Africa at the 2014 Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show. The results were announced at a gala event at the Mount Nelson on 28 May.
This port was the only port to win a gold medal at this prestigious competition, which included a select group of international judges and British Wine Masters. Two other ports from De Krans, the 2010 The Last Cape Vintage Reserve Port and the 2012 Cape Vintage Reserve Port were both awarded silver medals.
A total of 1 040 wines were entered of which only a total of 153 received gold or silver medals. Over the next two weeks the winning wines will be made available for public tastings in seven cities around South Africa. These include Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban, Port Elizabeth and East London, and Windhoek in Namibia. For more information about these tastings visit www.trophywineshow.co.za.
‘This trophy reaffirms our position as a leading port producer, but also bears extra special meaning for us. Not only was the late Tony Mossopy influential in the port industry he was also a friend of mine,’ says Boets Nel, De Krans co-owner.
The 2011 Cape Vintage Reserve is made using the classic port varietals Touriga Nacional, Tinta Barocca and Tinta Roriz. This port was also awarded a 5-star rating in the Platter Guide as well as a Veritas Gold medal winner.
2010 The Last Cape Vintage Reserve Port, currently available at De Krans and select retailers nationwide, also received a 5-star rating in the Platter Guide as well as Gold at Veritas and Michelangelo International Wine Awards, respectively. The 2012 Cape Vintage Reserve Port, although not yet released, was named SA Champion Port at the 2012 SA Young Wine Show.
