Calitzdorp Expressed Winter Festival

June marks several important dates and events on our calendar. Not only are we almost half-way through the year, but it also signals the start of winter. Cheers to rainy days (we’re grateful for great rain in the Klein Karoo), winter sun, cozying up in front of the fireplace, and good company to share your favourite red wine and port-style wines with. Of course, for us at De Krans, June is also synonymous with the annual Calitzdorp Expressed Winter Festival from 15 – 17 June 2024. Save the date

Unable to make it to Calitzdorp this June? Be sure to save the date for another highlight on the Calitzdorp calendar, which is the Calitzdorp Succulent festival taking place from 20 – 22 September 2024. This festival has evolved over the past few years into a unique and sought after weekend, bringing people together from all over the country to gather and embrace their mutual love for succulents. The roughly 50 km area between Calitzdorp and Oudtshoorn is one of the most species-rich arid areas when it comes to succulents making this a truly special place to meet like-minded individuals, stock up on ethically sourced succulents, learn more about the succulents in the areas and enjoy the Calitzdorp hospitality. For more information, please contact the Calitzdorp Tourism center at phone number 044 21 33 775, and make sure to follow us on our social media platforms as we’ll be sharing updates.

De Krans and the Buffalo: A Rich Heritage and a New Logo

Hot on the heels of the launch of the new Moscato label designs, we are excited to launch our brand new logo. We have started to slowly phase it in, so chances are you may have seen it somewhere, whether on our website, social media or at a festival or tasting. The history of the De Krans Wines dates back to 1890 when the current owners’ great grandfather bought part of the first farm established in Calitzdorp – named Buffalo Valley, or “Buffelsvallei” because of the buffalo that roamed freely in this area before the farm was established. The imagery of the buffalo has been and will continue to be the cornerstone of our heritage, causing us to increase the focus on the buffalo and embrace the new logo even more. The logo evolved from a frontal face of the buffalo, to a full body drawing – hand-illustrated by designer John Pace. We believe this illustration successfully and beautifully encapsulates all the symbolism of this magical creature – its beauty, strength and resilience. It is our hope that the heritage of the farm linked with the meaning of the logo will reignite the consumer to explore, embrace, and enjoy our De Krans range of wines.

In the same breath, we share with excitement that we will also be launching our brand new port-style labels later this winter. Consumers can look forward to a fresher take on the traditional port-style label, coupled with a more clean and modern look as well as celebrating our new logo. Please follow our social media platforms for updates and news, as well as the launch of our new labels.

First Awards of the Year

We know the year is flying past by the time we reach the first wine awards of the year. We are excited to share the results of this year’s National Wine Challenge 2024, incorporating Top 100 SA Wines. Both the De Krans Cape Tawny Limited Release NV (Non-vintage), and the De Krans Tritonia Verdelho 2022 received the coveted Double Platinum Award as well as being included in the Top 100 Wines. The De Krans Tritonia Calitzdorp Blend 2022 walked away with a Double Gold Award and the De Krans Cape Vintage Reserve 2021 received a Double Silver Award.

The De Krans Tritonia Calitzdorp Blend 2022 continued its winning streak at the prestigious Investec Trophy Wine Show Awards by being awarded a Gold medal, and with a score of 97 points, making it one of the top 5 red wines in the competition. The De Krans Cape Tawny Limited Release received a silver medal (93 points), as well as both the De Krans Cape Vintage Reserve 2021 (91 points), and De Krans Cape Vintage Reserve 2012 (91 points). All three these wines were in the Top 10 Fortified/Dessert Wines. The results were announced at the Investec Trophy Wine Show Awards lunch on Tuesday 4 June 2024.

De Krans Winter Favourites

It is officially port-style wine season! Although one of the best attributes of port-style wines is the incredible versatility, from serving it chilled, making cocktails with it or using it for cooking, in winter we too become traditionalists when sipping away on our favourite glass of port in front of the fireplace, or paired with a delicious dessert at a dinner with friends or family. You want to be able to swirl and savour a port-style wine so why not try it in a white or red wine glass? Of course in this case, it is more a glass half full situationJ, but you’ll be surprised about how it opens up the wine moving away from those small glasses. Although it’s winter, we also had to include a sparkling option, because brunches and celebrations never sleep. Enjoy our winter picks below:

A perfect alternative to a bubbly, the De Krans Premium White Moscato Perlé 2024 has the added benefit of being a more affordable option as well as having a lower alcohol of 9%. Produced using Muscadel grapes and Hanepoot juice, this natural sweet wine has a surprisingly refreshing acidity, making it a well-balanced wine that hits the sweet spot without being overly sweet. The slight fizz (even less bubbles than a sparkling wine), together with the delicious litchi and muscat flavours, makes this a firm favourite. We are also loving the new label design and are so grateful for the overwhelmingly positive feedback we have received following the launch of this new label design.

The De Krans Basket Press Cabernet Sauvignon 2022 is a perfect pick for an everyday red. Made in a medium bodied style, this wine undergoes a softer pressing action (we use an imported French champagne press, that is more than 70 years old), allowing the wine to be more accessible to be enjoyed at a younger age. While still staying true to the typical cabernet characteristics of cassis and ripe berries, plum, mulberries and dark cherries, with notes of cherry cigar, this is a juicy Cabernet Sauvignon, that can be enjoyed on its own, or paired with a pizza, pasta or with a braai.

When looking for a unique and quality red with a great story, look no further than the De Krans Touriga Nacional 2022. A Portuguese grape variety, and probably the biggest building block when it comes to producing a port (we usually use a minimum of 70% in our Cape Vintage Reserve), this wine has incredible flavours of dark berries, dried prunes, black currants, cherry cigar, white pepper and dark chocolate. De Krans planted its first Touriga Nacional in 1994 and was the first wine farm in South Africa to produce a single variety Touriga Nacional in 2000. If you are a foodie, be sure to experiment with pairings like ostrich steak, roasted lamb shank, venison and springbok carpaccio.

Why cook with red wine when you can use the De Krans Premium Cape Ruby NV. This port-style wine has a great flavours of red fruit, blue berries, cherries and ripe plums, that elevates any meaty dish, like a potjiekos, leg of lamb or waterblommetjiebredie. Alternatively, pair this young port (different ages between 1 and 3 years blended together), with mild cheeses and chocolate desserts like a chocolate brownie or chocolate fondant.

A firm favourite in summer (absolutely mouth-watering served chilled), the De Krans Cape Tawny Limited Release NV equally delights in winter with its unique taste and versatility when it comes to the occasion. This port-style wine has a beautiful amber colour due to its age ( a blend between 5 and 15 years), and delights with unique flavours of coffee, toffee, and nuts. This wine pairs especially well with desserts like crème brûlée and malva pudding, or with a cheese platter of mild cheeses.

The De Krans Cape Vintage 2019/2020 doesn’t need much introduction when it comes to port-style wines. Dark purple in colour, this wine spent 12 months in concrete tanks with a further 10 months in 30 to 40-year old small 300 litre barrels. The wine has full and rich flavours of red fruit, dried prunes, cocoa, spice and dark chocolate. What makes De Krans ports unique is that they are made in a “drier style”, so while it is a dessert wine, there is a balanced acidity and dry finish. The Cape Vintage is excellent on its own, but also serves as a great accompaniment for well-matured cheese.
