Nestled in the heart of the Klein Karoo in Calitzdorp, De Krans Wines has built a reputation for producing exceptional wines that consistently deliver on quality and value. While internationally recognised for its award-winning port-style wines and pioneering Moscato range first launched in 2012, their Classic Varietal collection showcases another side of De Krans, one where traditional grape varieties meet thoughtful, innovative winemaking.
The range consists of four distinctive wines: Free Run Chenin Blanc, Wild Ferment Chardonnay, Pinotage Rosé (Dry) and Basket Press Cabernet Sauvignon. Each tells its own story through a unique winemaking technique that enhances varietal character while creating wines that are vibrant, expressive of the terroir, and when paired with the right food.
The Free Run Chenin Blanc is crafted using only the free-run juice collected after destemming and before pressing the grapes. Naturally lower in phenolics, this method produces a wine with bright fruit purity, freshness and impressive ageing potential. This wine epitomises the fruit quality of a Karoo chenin, with an added freshness and balanced acidity.
Wild Ferment Chardonnay embraces spontaneous fermentation without the addition of commercial yeast. The slower, natural fermentation develops greater complexity, texture and depth while allowing the vineyard character to shine. This unwooded Chardonnay boasts flavours of lime, grapefruit and creamy butterscotch.
The Pinotage Rosé (Dry) offers crisp refreshment with delicate aromas of strawberries and subtle candy floss. With less than an hour of skin contact before gentle pressing, the result is a beautifully Provence-style rosé with lively acidity and a dry, elegant finish that pairs effortlessly with salads, seafood, charcuterie
The Basket Press Cabernet Sauvignon is gently pressed using De Krans’ historic French oak basket press, imported from France in 1955 and acquired by the farm in 1985, embracing traditional winemaking methods. The softer pressing action extracts elegant tannins while preserving the wine’s fruit expression, resulting in a Cabernet Sauvignon that is, smooth, has a juicy mouthfeel and is best enjoyed young without maturing
