New official notice: Moscato category in South Africa
When De Krans made the first Premium Moscato Perlé Wine, the wine style had to consist of a minimum of 85% of recognized Muscat varieties (such as Muscat Blanc, also known as Muscadel, and Muscat de Alexandrie, also known as Hanepoot), the same as required by the European Union for South African Moscato wines exported to Europe. This ensured excellent quality Moscato wines on the shelves in South Africa and abroad. This used to be the rules for labelling the wine as a Moscato in South Africa until very recently.
The new disputed rule for a South African Moscato now only requires the wine to “have a discernible muscat character,” with no minimum percentage of Muscat grape varieties required, meaning that such a wine can consist of any percentage of non-Muscat varieties and then still be classified as and called Moscato! In the light of this, it remains our commitment to continue to produce our Moscato range using only the very best Muscadel and Hanepoot grapes to ensure consistent, premium quality, to create delicious Moscato that you know and love – since the very beginning.

When the much anticipated De Krans Premium Rosé Moscato Perlé was released in 2021, the wine dazzled with a beautiful, pink blush colour – a result of a touch of Pinotage added to the Muscadel and Hanepoot. This natural sweet wine is packed with fresh tropical fruit, strawberry and candy floss flavours, with exotic spice and muscat aromas and a balanced, fresh acidity.
De Krans launched the redesign of the Moscato range label in 2024, keeping the familiar orange, purple and pink colours, while still creating a fresh and modern take on the existing label.
