Platter 5-stars For De Krans

With only two port-style wines receiving the coveted 5-star rating in the 46th edition of the Platter’s by Diners Club Wine Guide 2026 , De Krans Wines in Calitzdorp has once again proven its worth as one of SA’s leading producers.

This is not the first time the De Krans Cape Vintage Reserve has been recognised with this rating. Over the past 15 years this premium port-style wine has consistently been awarded a 5-star rating. According to winemaker, Christoff de Wet, this is a big wine full of ripe dark fruit notes of plum, mulberry and black currents. Well-rounded with smooth dark chocolate undertones and firm tannins results in n wine that would mature well over 30 years.

Hot on its heels, receiving 4 ½ stars were the De Krans Tritonia Calitzdorp (Red) Blend 2023, De Krans Tritonia Verdelho 2023, De Krans Cape Tawny, De Krans Cape Vintage 2023, De Krans Vintage 2022, De Krans Muscat Blanc 2025 and the Garden Route Sauvignon Blanc 2025.

Four-stars were awarded to the De Krans Classic Varietal Chardonnay 2024, De Krans Tinta Roriz 2022, De Krans Touriga Nacional 2024, De Krans Cape Ruby and the Garden Route Shiraz 2022.

Not only does this latest recognition reaffirm De Krans’ commitment to producing quality wines and port-style wines, but also its dedication to Portuguese varietals. The Tritonia Verdelho, for example, was recently named the Best Niche White Variety at this year’s Trophy Wine Show as well as one of the wines selected for the Caroline’s Fine Wines White Wine Review.

Since introducing South Africa’s first Touriga Nacional single variety wine in 2000, De Krans has pioneered the cultivation of these grapes in the Klein Karoo region, leveraging its similarities to Portugal’s Douro Valley. By innovating and presenting these varieties authentically, they’ve highlighted the versatility of Portuguese grapes, which can seamlessly transition from full-bodied dry reds to rich, complex port-style wines.

With roots in Calitzdorp dating back to the 1890s, De Krans Wines has cemented the reputation of Portuguese grape varieties in the region. These varietals have proven their staying power, solidifying their place in the industry.
