Heritage Day, also known as Braai Day, is around the corner and this year we will be doing some "braaing" of our own at De Krans Wines. Spend the day with us and enjoy some delicious braai dishes prepared by the bistro team. We will be open from 9 am and will start the braai at around 11am. The usual bistro menu will still be available with the kitchen closing at 4.30pm. Be sure to taste our wide variety of award winning wines, stock up on your favourites and enjoy a glass of vino outside under the vines.
For those who will be spending Braai Day tending to their own braai, here is a recipe to inspire you. Whether you use De Krans wine in a sauce or paired with your favourite braai dish, we look forward to sharing Braai Day with you.

*Recipe*
Lamb chops – Cape Ruby and cherry basting sauce

1 ½ cups Cherry Preserve
¾ cups De Krans Premium Cape Ruby
1 clove garlic
4 sprig fresh thyme
1 tbs chopped thyme leaves
Salt
Pepper

*Method*
Ensure the braai is very hot and allow the chops to reach room temperature before cooking. Place the chops on the hottest part of the braai and baste with Port basting sauce and cook on each side for a few minutes. Remove from the braai and allow to rest for around 5 minutes. Enjoy!

*De Krans Classic Varietal Range: post 1*

De Krans Wines is not only known for their award-winning port-style wines, but also their innovative approach to developing and producing new wines, typically in celebration of their unique Klein Karoo terroir. Apart from the popular Premium Moscato range, De Krans has also shifted their focus, especially during the last few years, to producing exclusive, quality, boutique style wines made from classic grape varieties, known as their Classic Varietal Range. This range focuses on the classic varieties commonly found in South Africa, but with a twist when it comes to the winemaking process or technique in producing each wine. De Krans Wines has recently released its new vintages in all categories, with the range consisting of the Free-Run Chenin Blanc 2021, Wild Ferment Chardonnay 2021, Pinotage Rosé 2021 and Basket Press Cabernet Sauvignon 2020. For the next few weeks we will be shining the spotlight on our Classic Varietal Range.

Award season continues with the De Krans Pinotage Rosé 2021 being selected as a Double Gold Winner at the annual Rosé Rocks competition - a true celebration of Rosé in all its shapes and sizes. It is also the fourth year in a row that the De Krans Rosé has received this honour - a testament to De Krans's ability to also produce quality wines made from classic varieties, in addition to their port -style wines.

A big thank you to each and everyone who visited us on Saturday for our (very cold) annual De Krans Blossom Festival. This is always such a special celebration as it marks the start of a new season and celebrates the beauty of new life on the farm, and ultimately, the promise of a great harvest next year.

From one festival to another - save the date! We are excited to announce the date of the annual Calitzdorp Succulent festival, which will be held this year 18 -19 September 2021. This unique festival has made such a positive contribution towards the education and appreciation of the incredible variety of succulents found in the specie-rich Calitzdorp and surrounding areas. *Terroir Range series: post 2*

In the second post featuring our Terroir Range, we will have a closer look at a few focus wines that form part of this range: A Twist of Fate, Touriga Nacional, and Tritonia Red (Calitzdorp Blend).

The De Krans A Twist of Fate is a lighter style, red blend of Portuguese grape varieties Tinta Barocca and Tinta Amarela. The wine has a lovely cherry red colour with flavours of strawberries, red cherries, leather and oak, with red berries and spice on the palate with a refreshing acidity and balanced tannin structure. This unique wine also pays tribute to how the Port industry started in Calitzdorp, with the first Portuguese grapes planted in 1973 when Tinta Barocca was mistaken for Shiraz. Similarly in 2004, Tinta Amarela was planted, under the impression it was Tinta Roriz. There is nothing like a pleasant surprise to completely change the course of action, and in turn, history.

Touriga Nacional, first planted at De Krans in 1994, is one of the most important building blocks in producing a quality port-style wine, providing the wine with a firm tannin structure, and allowing it to mature for many years. The Touriga Nacional has juicy, dark fruit flavours, spice and bold, but integrated tannins, resulting in a complex and well-structured wine.

The Tritonia Red (Calitzdorp blend) named after a plant, found only in the species-rich Klein Karoo region, is a blend of Portuguese grape varieties including Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barocca and Tinta Amarela. This full-bodied, yet elegant blend is the perfect combination of fruit and earthiness, with savoury notes on the palate and integrated oak. The 2018 vintage of this flagship red blend has also raked in several awards in 2020 including the scoring 93 points in the Tim Atkin SA Wine Report (British Master of Wine) and receiving a 4 ½- star rating in the coveted Platter’s Wine Guide.

*Terroir Range series: post 1*

Moving on from the port-style wine series, we start discussing the portuguese grape varieties that not only form the backbone of the delicious ports, but also make up our Terroir Range. Since producing the first Touriga Nacional single variety in South Africa in 2000, De Krans Wines has paved the way in embracing these special Portuguese grape varieties that flourishes in the Klein Karoo area, due to its similarities to the upper Douro Valley in Portugal. They have managed to continuously innovate and present these varieties to the consumer in a unique and authentic way. The mere fact that Portuguese grape varieties can undergo a metamorphosis from being a full-bodied dry red wine the one moment, to a delicious, complex port-style wine the next, is both enticing and exciting. The De Krans Terroir Range, the name a testament to the great match between climate, soil and grape varieties, consists of the Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, A Twist of Fate, Tritonia Red (Calitzdorp Blend) and Tritonia White, a blend of Verdelho and Malvasia Rei. In the next few posts we will look at some of the wines in more detail.
