De Krans scores a hat trick at NWC/Top 100 SA Wines

De Krans, widely known as being one of SA’s leading port-style wine producers, recently welcomed the wonderful news of having earned top praise at this year’s 2020 National Wine Challenge Awards/ Top 100 SA Wines. Both their Cape Vintage Reserve 2017 port-style wine and Touriga Nacional 2018 dry red wine were awarded the Grand Cru National Champion Best in Class titles (Best in Category) as well as a Double Platinum and position on the sought-after Top 100 SA Wines for 2020. The flagship dry red Tritonia Red (Calitzdorp blend) 2017 was also a recipient of a Double Platinum as well as securing a spot on the Top 100 list. The awards were announced at a special event on Wednesday, 15 July.

Winemaker Christoff de Wet describes the Cape Vintage Reserve 2017 as being a dark black in colour with a plum red rim. On the nose the wine is beautifully aromatic with ripe red berry, cherry, violet and dark chocolate flavours. Your first sip of this award-winning port reminds you of ripe dark fruits such as plums, mulberries and blackcurrants. A well-rounded port with smooth dark chocolate undertones and firm tannins holds the promise of a fortified wine guaranteed to mature for at least 30 years. Savour on its own or enjoy with a selection of well matured cheeses. Available from most outlets nationwide at R375 per bottle.

The Touriga Nacional 2018 is a beautiful dark plum red colour – the perfect Winter wine, yet suitable for all seasons. The wine displays a complex nose of dark red berries, violets and cacao. These flavours are intermingled with sweet dark cherry, prune, white pepper and toasted oak aromas. On the palate this full-bodied, yet well-balanced wine delivers a lingering aftertaste flavours of dark chocolate beautifully complemented with flavours of black currants, dried prunes, cherry cigars and violets. Savour on its own, or partner game dishes such as Ostrich steaks, Springbok carpaccio or a succulent roasted lamb shank. Available directly from the cellar, or selected outlets nationwide at R140 per bottle.

Not forgetting the Tritonia Red (Calitzdorp blend) 2017, which is named after a plant, found in the species-rich Klein Karoo area, and is a blend of Portuguese grape varieties including Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barocca and Tinta Amarela. This full-bodied, yet elegant blend is the perfect combination of fruit and earthiness with savoury notes on the palate and integrated oak. This wine also pairs perfectly with any type of red meat, especially venison and ostrich. Available in selected wine outlets nationwide, the Tritonia Red (Calitzdorp Blend) retails for R235 per bottle.
