De Krans Wines excels on the competition front
It’s the height of the competition season for the wine industry, and De Krans Wines in Calitzdorp is no stranger to bringing home sought after accolades. Confirmation that they are still regarded as South Africa’s leading producer of port-style wines.
In July the De Krans Cape Vintage Reserve 2017 was named as one of the Top 100 SA Wines for 2020, and more recently was awarded the Tony Mossop Trophy for the Best Cape Port at this year’s Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show. Of the 747 wines judged, 39 gold medals and 21 trophies were awarded in this year’s competition. Winemaker Christoff de Wet describes the Cape Vintage Reserve 2017 as being a dark black in colour with a plum red rim. On the nose the wine is beautifully aromatic with ripe red berry, cherry, violet and dark chocolate flavours. Your first sip of this award-winning port reminds you of ripe dark fruits such as plums, mulberries and blackcurrants. A well-rounded port with smooth dark chocolate undertones and firm tannins holds the promise of a fortified wine guaranteed to mature for at least 30 years. Savour on its own or enjoy with a selection of well matured cheeses. Available from most outlets nationwide at R375 per bottle.
Not stopping there the De Krans Cape Vintage Reserve 2020, which is yet to be released, was named the SA Champion Port at this year’s South African Young Wine Show, The same port was also named as the Overall Champion Wine at the 2020 Klein Karoo Young Wine Show, with De Krans Wines was awarded the title of Champion Private Wine Cellar at the same competition.
