Two Golds for De Krans at Veritas

De Krans Wines continued its winning streak at this year’s Veritas Award, scooping Gold medals for the De Krans Vintage Reserve 2018 and Garden Route Sauvignon Blanc 2022. The winners were announced at a special event in Paarl on 7 October.

Regarded as SA’s premier wine competition, the 2022 Veritas Awards awarded 103 Double Gold and 136 Gold medals. 1 312 entries were received, which were judged by an authoritative panel of 70 local specialists during a five-day blind tasting session.

Part of an award-winning lineage, the Cape Vintage Reserve 2018, De Krans’ flagship port-style wine, spent 20 months in a big oak vat and has a dark colour with a plum red rim. A big wine full of ripe dark fruit notes of plum, mulberry and black currants. Well-rounded, with smooth dark chocolate undertones and firm tannins, resulting in a wine that will mature well over 30 years. A port-style wine to savour on its own, or enjoy with well matured cheeses.

The Garden Route Sauvignon Blanc 2022, which forms part the De Krans portfolio,  showcases the typical freshness of green pepper and cut grass on both the nose and palate. The wine displays a strong character of tropical fruit such as guava and passion fruit, topped off with a subtle mineral quality. The wine has a balanced acidity with a lingering aftertaste. This wine was made with a lot of care, with the best quality berries hand selected before the destemming and crushing processes. Subsequently, only the free run juice was used, and the wine was left on the fine lees for six months before bottling. This crisp Sauvignon Blanc is an excellent addition to snoek pâté, seafood or chicken, and seasonal salads.
