That's a wrap on the 2023 award season with the 2024 Platter's Wine Guide results announced this week. The De Krans Cape Vintage Reserve port-style remains the most decorated wine style in our history with the 2021 Cape Vintage Reserve receiving the coveted 5 star rating in the 2024 Platter's Wine Guide. Good news! The start date for our apricot picking

Good news! The start date for our apricot picking has moved earlier, now starting 18 November to 3 December, which means we have about a week to go before we welcome our first guests to the farm. Apricots will be available for picking seven days a week from 8am - 4pm, at R9 per kilogram. Remember to bring along good shoes, a sun hat, sunscreen and a basket, bag or box for your apricots. We are super excited and can't wait to kick off our annual summer fruit picking season.

When visiting us, enjoy the fantastic opportunity to taste our wide variety of award-winning wines, and to stock up on your favourite or buy some Christmas gifts. Take a little break from the picking and enjoy breakfast, lunch a cheese platter, while sipping on your favourite De Krans wine. Bring your friends and family and enjoy summer at De Krans.

Join us from 18 November to 3 December 2023 for our annual picking of apricots, and from 3 February to 3 March for our popular hanepoot picking. Awards season continue as we share our 2023 Verita

Awards season continue as we share our 2023 Veritas Awards results. It was once again the Cape Vintage Reserve 2020, our flagship port-style wine, that had the highest score of all our wines and was awarded a Gold Medal. The Cape Tawny Limited Release NV, Tritonia Verdelho 2022, Tinta Roriz 2020, Muscat Blanc 2023 and Garden Route Sauvignon 2023 @gardenroutewines were all awarded a Silver Medal.

After having spent three weeks in the magical Port

After having spent three weeks in the magical Portugal, we asked our winemaker, Christoff to tell us a bit more about his experience. "Before going to the Douro valley for what was an adventure of a lifetime awaiting me, I first spent some time in Oporto or Porto to find my “feet” and to get to know the people, their culture, the food and of course, their wide range of different wines and wine styles. After spending three days in Porto, I got a car to drive to where my home for would be for the next 3 weeks - Quinta da Formigosa. This is a small, but modern, state-of-the-art winery with an incredible view overlooking the Douro river and valley with vineyards everywhere running along the contour lines of the hills - looking at this beautiful unbelievable sight gives one goosebumps.

Next up was the Douro Wine Region Valley which up to Barca de Alva, is the oldest demarcated wine region in the world. The Douro river was the first to carve the deep valleys out of the land and then man came to transform the schist mountains into soil and stone terraces. I was also lucky to visit quite a few wineries, and how special to get to see them operating in full swing during their harvest time. Here are just a few wineries that stood out that I visited:

1. Quinta da Gricha (Churchill Estate) – They have the oldest lagares (open fermenters) for port production, which they still use today. The winery was build in 1852 and a must try wine is the Churchill Vintage 2011 Port.

2. Sandeman – Just across the river from where I stayed was Sandeman. They are well known for their Tawny Port and if you can ever manage to get your hands on their 40 year-old Tawny Porto, it’s a must! Be sure to also try their younger Tawny ports!

3. Quinta do Pego – Their Quinta do Pego Port LBV (Late Bottled Vintage) 2018 was well worth it after dinner and some chocolate truffles. This is also where I ended up watching the rugby game between South Africa and…..Ireland ☹ Nevertheless, I had a great time with an old colleague as well as Niel Bester and his friends enjoying great wines and a fantastic local meal. *Continued in comments*

We have some good news to start the short work week with two of our wines receiving awards following the Rosé Wine and Spirit Challenge 2023. The De Krans Premium Moscato Rosé 2023 walked away with Double Gold award and the De Krans Pinotage Rosé received a Gold award. The Pinotage Rosé, produced using 100% pinotage, is a beautiful, dry rosé with flavours of juicy red fruit and candyfloss with a balanced and refreshing acidity, making the wine super smooth and easy to drink. The Premium Moscato Rosé, is a naturally sweet with soft bubbles, and delicious flavours of muscat, litchi, strawberries and tropical fruit. Made of Muscadel, Hanepoot and a small amount of Pinotage, this wine is best served chilled as an alternative for a bubbly or with a cheese and charcuterie platter or mildly spiced dishes.
