De Krans Wines – the R62 family destination you can’t miss
De Krans Wines is a must–visit destination in Calitzdorp along the popular Route 62. Nestled between the Swartberg mountains, De Krans Wines has much to offer to visitors over the summer and festive season. Known for their award-winning wines, embrace the opportunity to taste the wide range of De Krans wines, from classic varietals such as their Free Run Chenin Blanc or their popular Pinotage Rosé, to their port-style wines. Not forgetting their dry, natural wines made using Portuguese grapes, such as Touriga Nacional and Verdelho. If you are looking for something sweeter with some fizz for the summer, look no further than the interesting and delicious P&T (port-style and tonic) – a premixed and ready-to-drink sparkling cocktail with flavours of passion fruit, citrus, and pineapple. Alternatively, try the Premium Moscato range – a popular wine range known for its lower alcohol content, slight fizz, and delicious muscat and fruit flavours. The Premium Rosé Moscato Perlé recently received the title of Sparkling Wine of the Year at the 2023 Ultra Value Wine Challenge so be sure to give it a try – best served chilled. Should you not be able to make the trip to Calitzdorp, the wines are available to order online on www.dekrans.co.za, or from most retail outlets nationwide.
Whether you are fueling up for the long road or simply visiting us for a leisurely breakfast or lunch, your visit won’t be complete without a stop at the De Krans Bistro & Deli. Grab a seat outside under the beautiful lush, green vineyard trellis where you can order a variety of hearty, wholesome dishes whilst enjoying Klein Karoo hospitality at its best. All the dishes have been paired to be enjoyed with wines from the De Krans range, allowing visitors the option to enjoy a thoughtfully curated food and wine pairing experience. For those with a sweet tooth, be sure to keep an eye out for the delicious desserts on offer. Visitors can also choose to sit indoors, which is air-conditioned – perfect for those sweltering Karoo days. In addition, the Deli also offers visitors a wide selection of homemade items produced in and around Calitzdorp and the Klein Karoo. These include olives, olive oil, preserves, homemade rusks, honey and other delicious treats from the area.
Make use of the outside space by taking a stroll through the vineyard, playing some outdoor chess or simply soaking up the Karoo sun. There is also a playground for young children with the Bistro also offering child-friendly drinks and a delicious kiddies menu, making this the perfect stop and family friendly destination. We are also a dog-friendly winery, and welcome you and your dogs this festive period – we kindly ask to please keep them on a leash for the duration of your visit.
During the months of November through to February De Krans Wines is also the perfect destination for fruit picking – classic, old-school fruit picking. Bring your basket, cooler box or buy a box at the farm, and head on out into the orchards and vineyards for what has become an annual tradition with locals and visitors. A fun family activity for young and old, and the best news is that furry friends are also welcome (bearing in mind that they have to be on a leash).
From 18 November to 3 December the Bulida apricots will be available to pick at R9 per kg, whilst the annual Hanepoot picking takes place from 3 February to 3 March 2024 at R10 per kg. An additional highlight to the Hanepoot picking will be the Hanepoot Trail Run, which takes place on 10 February, and is being hosted by Jakhals Events – perfect for outdoor enthusiasts (For more information or to buy your trail running ticket, please visit https://jakhalsevents.co.za). Please note that the fruit picking is subject to availability, and to avoid disappointment we advise that you phone the farm beforehand or look out for updates on our social media platforms and website ahead of your visit.
