Win your weight in wine with Calitzdorp photo competition during the Calitzdorp Blossom Weekend How to Enter: Anyone is allowed to enter, no cost involved, except employees of any of the participating wineries in Calitzdorp, or their direct family. A maximum of 5 photos per person per entry, taken IN CALITZDORP during the BLOSSOM WEEKEND op 1 and 2 September, may be entered. Photo’s (with a maximum of 1MB per photo) may be entered by emailing dekrans@mweb.co.za Closing date for the competition is 14 September 2018, and the winner will be announced on 19 September 2018. 1 & 2 September 2018 Make your way to De Krans Wine Cellar in Calitzdorp for the annual Blossom Festival which takes place over the weekend of the 1st and 2nd of September. This time of the year the fruit trees, in particular the apricot and peach trees, are in full bloom and it is truly a sight to behold. The Spring blossoms traditionally indicate the start of the season for the fruit and wine industries. Visitors to De Krans will be able to experience this beautiful sight for themselves as well as enjoy a few more exciting offerings during the weekend: Kickstart your Saturday with the Vineyard Fun Run.

The annual Calitzdorp Winter Festival will take place from 15 – 17 June this year. Prepare yourself for a weekend of interesting red wines from Portuguese grape varieties, the best port- style wines, good food, live music and fun activities held throughout the town. For something unique, be sure to book your space for the Calitzdorp Mystery dinner on Saturday 16 June, when you will visit 5 secret locations where you will enjoy different food and wines.

Be sure to diarise the annual Blossom Festival (Bloeiselfees), which will take place on the 1st of September 2018 at De Krans. Bring your friends and family and celebrate the first day of spring.  Be ready to feast your eyes on the beautiful peach and apricot blossoms while participating in the photography competition. Other activities include playing boules, a market day on the Saturday, as well as a fun walk/run.  Be sure to also use the opportunity to taste our wines and port-style wines, or have a lovely breakfast or lunch at the bistro.

The De Krans Bistro and Deli excelled at the annual Klein Karoo Gourmand Awards (Smulpaap-toekennings), scooping the 2017 Gourmand Destination Award (Farm Stall Eatery Category). The awards took place on 16 March at the Village Trading Post in De Rust. The criteria for this award is consistent good quality food, a great atmosphere and fantastic service. Chef and Bistro manager, Shannon Botes, was in attendance to receive the award on behalf of his team. The De Krans Bistro and Deli was also awarded the Tripadvisor Certificate of Excellence and became the Tripadvisor recommended number one destination in Calitzdorp. Visitors came flocking to the farm this summer to pick their own Bulida apricots, Oom Sarel yellow cling peaches and Hanepoot grapes. The apricots are usually picked over a period of two weeks from end of November until the first week of December and the peaches the last two weeks of December. The Hanepoot picking in February was a great success as always. In the times we live in, it seems that a rustic, close-to nature, do-it-yourself, slow activity is so scarce, making this opportunity even more unique and popular. It seems just like yesterday when we wrote our November 2017 newsletter and so much has happened since then. We made it through one of the toughest harvests while battling with the worst drought in 100 years. The entire team worked incredibly hard around the clock to get in as much grapes as possible and the managing team had their hands full prioritizing between grapes based on their sugars and the condition of the vines. Luckily, while the harvest was much smaller (down 45% of our 2017 harvest), what we lacked in volume we made up in exceptional quality. While the harvest was our main focus, we couldn’t loose

What could be better than combining two of the things we love most - wine and coffee (in no particular order, of course). The final result of this combination is the De Krans Original Espresso – port and coffee all in one bottle. When the winemaking team at De Krans created this style of wine a few years ago, the end result produced a wine with strong flavours of coffee beans, combined with a rich character and perceived sweetness. It has proved to be a resounding success for the team as it has become one of the popular ports in the De Krans range. And no, no coffee beans
